Hummel and Landy : Statistical Viewpoint on Theory of Evidence
نویسنده
چکیده
Abstrucl-We describe a viewpoint on the DempsterlSbafer “theory of evidence,” and provide an interpretation which regards the combination formulas as statistics of the opinions of “experts.” This is done by introducing spaces with binary operations that are simpler to interpret or simpler to implement than the standard combinat ion formula, and showing that these spaces can be mapped homomorphical ly onto the DempsterlShafer theory of evidence space. The experts in the space of “opinions of experts” combine information in a Bayesian fashion. W e present alternative spaces for the combinat ion of evidence suggested by this viewpoint.

Evidence as opinions of experts

متن کاملCombining Bodies of Dependent Information
Recently, Hummel and Landy proposed a variation on the Dempster/Shafer theory of evidence that tracks only the first and second order statistics of the opinions of sets of experts. This extension permits the tracking of statistics of probabilistic opinions, however, as opposed to tracking merely Boolean opinions (or possibilities within the "frame of discernment"). Both the Dempster/Shafer form...
متن کاملExplanatory Reasoning for Inductive Confidence
We present Explanatory Reasoning for Inductive Confidence (ERIC), a computational model of explanation generation and evaluation. ERIC combines analogical hypothesis generation and justification with normative probabilistic theory over statement confidences. It successfully captures a broad range of empirical phenomena, and represents a promising approach toward the application of explanatory k...
متن کاملAdopting Constructivist versus Objectivist Grounded Theory in Health Care Research: A Review of the Evidence
Background and aim: Grounded theory has taken some different theoretical perspectives since its creation in 1967 by Barney Glaser. Considering that applying grounded theory partly depends on an awareness of its philosophical perspectives, gaining knowledge about these various perspectives is required for health care professionals who are interested in studying the social processes. This review ...
متن کاملToward a Process Model of Explanation with Implications for the Type-Token Problem
The ability to generate explanations plays a central role in human cognition. Generating explanations requires a deep conceptual understanding of the domain in question and tremendous flexibility in the way concepts are accessed and used. Together, these requirements constitute challenging design requirements for a model of explanation. We describe our progress toward providing a such a model, ...
